Orr, Thomas. "Genre in the Field of Computer Science and Computer Engineering." IEEE transactions on professional communication. 42, no. 1, 1999: 32-37.
In this journal article, the author Orr describes a study of nearly 200 international faculty in the domain of computer science and computer engineering. Orr identifies approximately 90 written genres within the computing discipline, grouped into five major categories:
- Generation – creation of new ideas, thoughts and information
- Procuration – obtaining information, equipment, funding, etc.
- Dissemination – distribution of information, instructions, theory
- Evaluation – measuring of people, information, products
- Regulation – standardizing/normalizing of professional activities
My research question has become more refined since starting my readings, and I am now studying the rhetorical methods used by engineers, and comparing them to those used with the general public. As such, I found this article while looking for existing studies on engineering genres. Although I am unlikely to directly use this study’s results in my own research, it does serve as a good reference point to highlight that within any engineering discipline and discourse community, there are likely to be just as many written genres. This told me that I had to reduce the sampling frame for my research study to a specific engineering discipline and discourse community.
